5 Mistakes to Avoid When Painting Your Front Door

Selecting A Color Too Quickly
Choosing the right color for your front door takes time and consideration. This will be your visitors' very first impression of your home and style, after all! Take some time to consider multiple colors and what different shades will look like with your house exterior and landscaping. Once you’ve narrowed it down to your top choices, search for the paint colors on Pinterest for examples of what that color looks like on other homes. Colorful Remedies also offers Complimentary Color Consultation with any booked job, so let us help you choose the perfect color!

Selecting the Wrong Paint & Finish
Your front door is one of the highest traffic areas of a home, not to mention it needs to withstand the wear and tear of changing seasons and inclement weather. Semigloss, gloss or high-gloss finishes ensure you get the cleanest look with a semi scratch-resistant finish. For your front door, we choose exterior paint in your favorite color to make sure your front door can stand up to all types of weather.

You Don’t Thoroughly Clean Your Door
If you think your door is clean enough as it is, think again. Your front door collects dust, dirt, and grime throughout the year and needs a thorough cleaning before the next step. Light soap, water, and a bit of elbow grease will take those stains and dirt right off.

You Don’t Prep Your Door
A light sand with fine-grit sandpaper before priming is key. We do this to ensure that there are no bumps or divots visible on the door. We also make sure to wipe off all the dust that’s piled up from sanding. This helps the primer and paint adhere to the front door.

Not Giving Your Door Adequate Time to Dry
Colorful Remedies will be sure to give your door about two hours in between the first and second coat. Once the second coat has dried for two hours, place a sheet of wax paper between the door and the door jam if you’d like to give it even more time to dry. This prevents any paint from getting where it doesn’t belong.

And viola! Your front door has given your house a whole new personality. Follow Colorful Remedies on Instagram for more insider tips and tricks!
